A square metre of 170 GSM fabric weighs 170 grams. A higher number means more fabric weight per unit area. It does not tell you everything about softness, airflow or how long a sheet will last: yarn, weave, finishing and care matter too.
As a practical comparison, 140 GSM fabric is lighter per square metre than 170 GSM, while 200 GSM is heavier. That does not automatically make one better. Compare the actual fabric and choose the feel you enjoy rather than treating a single GSM threshold as a pass or fail.

Will higher GSM make my bed warmer?
Fabric weight is only one part of the bed. Your duvet insert, quilt, mattress protector, room temperature and number of layers all influence warmth. A heavier sheet is not a substitute for selecting the right insert or adjusting your layers.
For warm nights, consider which layers you actually need. For cooler nights, use a suitable duvet or quilt. No sheet weight can guarantee a particular sleeping temperature.
GSM or thread count: which should I compare?
GSM measures weight per square metre; thread count measures threads within a specified area. They describe different things. Compare linen products using composition, GSM, construction and care instructions together, rather than judging them by a cotton-style thread-count target.

- Fit: match actual centimetres or inches. Queen and King labels vary between countries.

Does higher GSM mean longer-lasting sheets?
Not by itself. Fibre and yarn quality, weave, finishing, friction and washing all affect wear. GSM alone cannot support a fixed lifespan guarantee.
Does GSM tell me how thick a quilt is?
